8月初旬までは、日本からお送りします。
今回は帰国直前に経験した"Student helper"というものについてお話します。
イギリスの大学では、大学にもよりますが、6月末ごろから"Pre-sessional"という留学生向けの短期の英語コースが開講されます。
受講する学生は基本的にIELTSの点数が入学基準に満たなかった人。
たまに、IELTSの点数は基準を満たしていても受講する人もいます。
そのコースは本科ではないものの、数百人単位のたくさんの留学生がやってきます。
留学生は大学に着いて右も左も分からない状態。
しかし、大学のスタッフだけで留学生の面倒を見れないので、Student helperというものを募集。
在学生でorientationやregistrationなどのお手伝いをしてくれる人を募集しているのです。
私はそれをFacultyからのメールで知り、すぐ応募し採用されました。
最初は完全にボランティアなのだと思っていたのですが、実は給与付き！！（時給8ポンド）
二日間だけですが、留学生のお手伝いをしました。
Student helperの仕事をしている間は、下の黄緑のTシャツを着ていなければいけません。
どんなことをしたのかというと...
①寮へ迎えに行く。
②キャンパスのあちこちで行われる説明会や登録会へ連れていく。
③キャンパス案内
この3つは大学から正式に頼まれた仕事。
以下はアンオフィシャルですが、student helperとして求められていること。
④学生からの個人的な質問・相談、トラブルなどに応じる。
（どこで買い物したら良いか、おすすめの携帯会社、銀行手続き、学費の支払いなど）
⑤道や施設、バスのことを聞かれたときに応じる。
（キャンパス内を仕事用のTシャツで歩いていると、かならず呼び止められる）
④のトラブルについては、説明会のときに大量の現金をなくした学生がいたので、一緒に探したり（見つかるとは期待してなかったけど）、大学のpre-sessionalの担当、説明会主催者、student officeなどに
連絡したりしました。
そして、個人的にはstudent helperとしての役割がもう一つ存在すると思います。
お手伝いした留学生はほとんど中国かその他アジア出身で、案内している最中は同じ国籍同士でかたまっていることが多いのですが、student helperとして、違う国籍の人同士が話せるような環境を作るのも大事かなと思います。
そのためにも、まずは自分が留学生に話しかけて、英語を話す機会を作ってあげると良いです。
留学生のお手伝い関係で募集されているお仕事はほかにもあります。
たとえば、空港の出迎え, 寮, registration, IT workshop, バス乗り場の案内など。
それから、Student Unionの中にもPre-sessionalのお手伝いやorientationを運営する部門があり、留学生向けのイベント（スポーツ・レクリエーションなど）の運営や相談窓口としての機能を果たしています。
また、9月はイギリス人・留学生関係なく、freshers (新入生)のお手伝いがあります。
私は9月の寮のお手伝いの応募をしましたが、採用結果はまだ来ておりません...
採用されているといいなぁ。
もう一回留学生関係だと、1月末に第2セメスターだけ来る留学生のお手伝いがあります。
それもやってみたいですね。
あとは、うちの大学では、Student Ambassadorというものに登録をすれば、Open dayというオープンキャンパスの日に高校生とその保護者を案内する仕事を紹介してもらえます。
そんなわけで、ちょっとしたお小遣いが稼げる仕事が結構あります。
たぶん、こういったお仕事はほかのイギリスの大学でもあるんじゃないかと思います。
求人情報は、大学のFBやTwitter, ブログ, メールで手に入るので、こういった仕事をしてみたい人は大学関連のものはsubscribeするのをおすすめします♪
私のお仕事は、特にこれといった書類や手続きは必要なかったのですが、場合によれば"National Insurance Number"というものが必要で、手続きして取得する必要があります。
私はキャンパス内の仕事でもそれが必要かもしれないと先輩に言われたので、一応申請しましたが、結果なくても大丈夫とのことでした。
申請はこちらのサイトからできますが、£50ぐらいかかります。（私の二日間の給料の半分以上...）
キャンパス内外に関わらず、バイトを考えているのであれば、National Insurance Numberのことも頭に入れておいたほうが良いと思います。

Today I'm gonna write about "student helper", which I experienced at uni before going back home.
At universities in the UK, "pre-sessional", a short-term English language course designed for international students takes place from the end of June although it depends on each university. (Some may not hold.)
Students who take this course usually couldn't get enough IELTS score to enter their ideal degree.
However, some students come to this course even though they have enough IELTS score.
This course is not a main degree programme, however, hundreds of students participate it.
Those international students apparently feel confused or nervous in the new environment.
But it is difficult for staff at the university to guide all the students, therefore, they look for "students helper".
They attempt to find the students who can offer help in registration or orientation for the new international students.
I knew this by email from my faculty and sent them an application to this.
Initially, I thought this would be a non-paid volunteer job, but it was actually paid. (£8/ hour)
As a "student helper" I helped the international students with their induction for two days (only two days though).
While working I had to wear the green T-shirt.
What I did as a student helper...
1. Picking up students in their accommodation halls
2. Taking them to welcome talk, registration, and workshops.
3. Having a tour around the campuses for the students
4. Answering students' questions about university life or dealing with any problems happening during the induction.
5. Responding to any concerns of new students, such as how to get important facilities or which bus to take.
I suppose there is another role of student helper...
The international students are mainly from China and other Asian countries.
They tend to talk with the same nationalities probably because they are not confident about their English and unfamiliar with the environment.
So maybe it is an important task for student helpers to create atmosphere or environment where people from different countries can chat with each other.
In order to do that, student helpers should speak to the students and offer opportunities to speak English.
Not only the works I did but also other kinds of jobs regarding international students are available.
For example, greet&meet service providers at airport, accommodation assistants, registration staffs, IT workshop assistants, helpers at bus stop (advising which bus you should take) etc
SUSU (Southampton University Student Union) also has some functions to help international students in pre-sessional course and organise events or activities such as recreation or sports.
In September, there are opportunities to help all new students regardless domestic or international students.
I applied to the accommodation assistants, but the result hasn't come yet. Hopefully, I will get a place.
Additionally, some international students start their study abroad programme here at the end of January.
I hope I can do something next January too.
Furthermore, if you register "Student Ambassadors", you will be informed about jobs for Open Days.
These kinda jobs seem helpful for students who want a bit money.
Probably these jobs are available at other universities besides mine.
Information about the jobs are from SNS or email, so I recommend you to check the university emails and accounts on SNS carefully if you wanna try.
You may need "National Insurance Number" to get paid through the jobs even if you work on campus.
I didn't need it fortunately, but you should ask the university if it's necessary when you apply to jobs.
